1. Fertilizer
If you want to enjoy a vibrant display of waterlily blooms throughout the summer and fall, fertilizing your waterlilies is an important step. You can choose between an annual fertilizer, applied once at the start of the season, or fertilizer tabs that need to be added periodically according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep in mind, waterlilies are heavy feeders, so regular fertilization is key to achieving those stunning, show-stopping blooms.
2. Sunlight
Equally important is ensuring your waterlilies receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. While dappled sunlight might keep the lily pads looking healthy, it often results in fewer blooms. Some shade-tolerant varieties can get by with about four hours of sunlight, but most thrive best with six hours or more.
3. Potting
When it comes to planting, choose a large container that can accommodate the robust root systems of waterlilies. For hardy varieties, aim for a pot at least 10 inches wide, but bigger is better. While solid planters that waterlilies usually come in may be convenient to place in your pond, they are not ideal. These root systems aggressively look for nutrients and oxygen, which will take them out of a solid pot in search of what they need. An soft aquatic pot made out of a breathable material will allow nutrients and oxygen in to the plant
4. Planting
Use a specialized aquatic potting mix rather than standard potting soil to give your waterlilies the best start and avoid causing an algae bloom with the wrong fertilizer in the soil. Start with a one-inch layer of soil in your container. If you’re using an annual fertilizer, spread it over this layer, then add another thin layer of soil. Transfer your waterlily from its nursery pot and position it on top of the soil, filling in around it with more aquatic soil. If you’re using fertilizer tabs, now is the time to insert them. Cover the top of the soil with river rocks or small pebbles to prevent the soil from washing away and being rooted up by your koi.
5. Placement
Place your waterlilies in your pond at the correct depth—typically around two feet if that’s the pond’s depth, or on a plant shelf if the pond is deeper.
6. Enjoy!
With the right mix of sunlight and fertilizer, your waterlilies will bloom beautifully all season long. If you’re using fertilizer tabs, be sure to add them as recommended. For annual fertilizers, one application will last the entire season.
